I made rosaries many years ago, and someone suggested I do green scapulars as well. They sent me a lot of green squares and iron-on fronts and backs, but when I first started making them I thought they were to wear around your neck, and so I used all the green cord on the first one! When I asked if I could get more cord, they told me that I was supposed to cut it short and attach it to each one like a little loop at the top. Well, I never got more cord, and so I started just ironing the fronts and backs onto the green squares. I did quite a few of them this way. Then I noticed that most of the already made up green scapulars I had ever seen looked like they had been cut with pinking shears. But if I cut these already pre cut squares any closer, they would seem too small for the pictures to be ironed on. So my questions are: Should I buy more cord? Should I keep making them plain? Should I start over with pinking shears and new cloth? Should I throw away the ones I did, or do you think they would be acceptable like that? And what do I do with them once they are done? I am trying to decide if it's worth salvaging this job, or if I should just go back to making rosaries. I hate to waste all this material. Thank you. I hope somebody knows the answers to these questions.

Hello "Mama"

Thanks for a great question. In my humble opinion, I think the Green Scapulars you have already made should be fine, without the little cord, and without pinked edges. Many peope DO like to wear a Green Scapular around their neck. In that case of course one would need to have long cords attached. But the most common use of the Green Scapular is as a "tool of conversion."  The recipient is asked to carry the scapular with them, so many will place it in their purse or pocket.  Thus the small size with a tiny cord became the most practical style. We have learned over the course of years making scapulars that the Green Scapular need be made only partly of wool. Thus you find most often the wool-felt squares supplied. The pinking is to keep the edges from fraying, merely a design choice rather than a Church requirement. If your scapulars include an image of Our Lady and the words "Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death,"  your scapulars meet regulations. However, if you plan to make more scapulars in the future, I would obtain the green middy braid, pinking shears or pinking rotary cutter. These tools will allow you to make your scapulars uniformly with other scapular makers. See our pages on

Our Lady's Scapulars   Make Green Scapulars    and Best Supplies  for more information.

See our Requests for Rosaries  for a listing of Missions to whom you might consider donating your Green Scapulars.

Hope this has answered your questions. Please let us know if we can be of further help.

     God bless you,  - MaryT

Thank you, Mary. I will finish making the scapulars with the materials that I have, and will try shipping them to the addresses which have requested scapulars or materials other than rosaries. I am not sure how to package them, as your instructions are mainly for rosaries, but assume that the information is basically the same. Right now the finished ones are stacked and banded together with rubber bands. Maybe I could ship them this way, in some of those padded bags.

I don't think I want to make any more scapulars right now, but in the future, I will order the kits that include everything I need. Until then, I will just finish the ones I have, and then decide what to do with the rosary materials I have, as well.

Many thanks, again. :)

You are most welcome "Mama."  Your note suggested to us that we should include binding and shipping directions for scapulars as well as rosaries on our SHIPPING PAGE. We have added an image and that info just today. So thank YOU for your tip!

God bless, - MaryT
