Today is the anniversary of the battle of Lepanto. In 1571 an army of Catholic warriors called the Holy League took on the Ottoman Turk Muslims in a critical naval battle that would decide the fate of Christendom in Europe at that time. Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother and the faithful combat of thousands of men, the Catholic faith was preserved. Pope St. Pius V recognized October 7th as the feast of Our Lady of Victory crediting the Blessed Virgin with the victory. Since then the name of this feast day has been changed to the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
This wise and spiritually insightful Pope understood the importance of Our Lady's part in the fight for Christianity. He called on all of Europe to pray the rosary faithfully, pleading with heaven for the strength and courage to stand tall in the fight. The Blessed Virgin, our Spiritual General, responded with her protection. She cast her eyes on the Holy League and dispensed the necessary graces from her Son to ensure a victory.
